The DEFIBRILLATORS are Racing For Steve-O and in honor of Patty Callahan at the Barron Lake Triathlon! WE SHOCK BECAUSE WE ROCK!

Dear Friends and Family,
Please join The Defibrillators (Jennifer, Sarah & Shelly) in honoring Steve (Steve-O) Smith,  as we "Race for Steve-O" during the Barron Lake Triathlon August 30th, 2014.

From Sarah Ingle: A Little Extra Motivation

I have known Sarah Cira since 2009 when I started working in Pre-Op at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.  When her dad Steve was diagnosed with brain cancer, I was just getting back into running after having my son Brian. I felt it an honor to decorate my race gear with "STEVE-O" to show my support for a fellow runner and friend. On long runs preparing for her Chicago Marathon, Sarah would update me about her dad and his progress. That just made me want to get behind team Steve-O and fight with him even more.
In May 2013, my Aunt Patty had a seizure, which she had never had before.  Later I learned she had been diagnosed with the same type of brain tumor as Steve-O. It was devastating. Patty was fun loving and a blast to be around. She was a prankster and ALWAYS had a smile for you. At the time she was diagnosed, I was training for my 1st marathon and I told Patty I was dedicating my race to her. My race motto was "4PATTY" and I stuck the words on the same shirt I had written Steve-O on. She wrote the following to me:
"Sarah, I feel completely honored that you are running for me. I am now a star because of you. I will be thinking of you as I go through my treatments and I will remember your sacrifices when I am faced with tests and pain. I love you."
Patty passed in July 2013.  She helped give my running meaning and made it all the more important to continue to fight with Steve-O and Sarah. By racing for Steve-O, I'm also racing 4Patty. :)

As some of you may know, Steve-O is a 40 year Michiana resident, swim coach, teacher and World Champion Triathlete.  He is one of the most decorated amateur triathletes of all time with over 250 triathlons completed.  A few of achievements include:steve-running-kona.jpg

  • 12-time Kona Ironman competitor (4 of these he was in the top 5 in his age group),
  • 15-time All-American by USAT
  • 3-time Grand Master Champion by USAT
  • 7 consecutive USAT National Championship titles
  • Long Course World Champion
  • Short Course World Champion
  • Boston Marathon Finisher
  • Member of the Indiana High School Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame
  • Featured in Sports Illustrated "Faces in the Crowd"

He has been a huge inspiration to many!

April 24th, 2012 he was diagnosed with a deadly brain tumor called Glioblastoma. In true “Steve-O” style, he continues to battle this cancer with determination, strength and courage.  Due to his illness, Steve-O has been unable to race and struggles from the side effects of the tumor.  This is why I am going to "race" on his behalf!

Steve-O's vision and mission for this foundation is to help Michiana children have the opportunity to be involved in sports and athletics regardless of physical, mental and financial barriers.  Steve taught high school health and PE for 40 years while also coaching high school swimming. This is where he became passionate and inspired by his many amazing students and athletes with special needs over the years.  When asked what he'd like to do with funds raised by the foundation, he didn't hesitate to say he wanted to help his "kids"!

Please help us in supporting this great cause by donating today!  Any amount of donation is greatly appreciated!!

Please donate to Racing For Steve-O!

$33,278.81 raised
GOAL: $50,000.00

Thank you so much for your support of Racing For Steve-O!  The donation you make today helps Steve-O's mission to offer scholarships to children of all abilities so they may participate in recreational activities and camps!

Did you know it cost $30 per session for therapeutic horseback riding?  Or that it costs $600 for a week at Camp Millhouse?  These costs can brake the bank for so many in our special needs community that can greatly benefit from these essential services!  Please help support these great activities for our Michiana special needs community!

We are a 501c3 non-profit organization.  All donations are tax deductible.
