Why do we want to help kids?
Steve-O's vision and our mission for this foundation is to help Michiana children have the opportunity to be involved in sports and athletics regardless of physical, mental and financial barriers. Steve taught high school health and PE for 40 years while also coaching high school swimming. This is where he became passionate and inspired by his many amazing students and athletes with special needs over the years. When asked what he'd like to do with funds raised by the foundation, he didn't hesitate to say he wanted to help his "kids"!
Where do our funds raised go?
Our goal for the foundation is to offer scholarships to Michiana special needs children so they can participate in recreational activities such as Reins of Life, Camp Millhouse, SOLO, Special Olympics, Indiana Ultimate Wings Cheer Team, Kan Do Kickers and other Michiana recreational activities. So far in 2014, we've donated $300 to sponsor a team with Challenger Little League. Our scholarship application should be made available soon and will be accessible via our website. In the meantime, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if interested in receiving a scholarship!
In 2013, we've donated funds to the South Bend Kids Triathlon to help purchase helmets of various sizes that are loaned out to participants who either do not own a helmet, but want to participate, or to individuals who forgot or lost their helmet. This year's donation will go towards the purchase of bikes in various sizes to loan out to children who either do not own a bike, but want to participate, or to individuals whose bikes break down on race day and need to borrow one to compete.
We also donated funds to "Jamie's Challenge" for the 2013 Logan's Run to benefit the Logan's Center in South Bend. LOGAN exists to support people with disabilities in achieving their desired quality of life.
We also donated funds from wrist bands sold at Ella's Walk-n-Roll to benefit Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
Who helps make this Foundation possible?
The Foundation is run strictly by volunteers. It was founded by Steve-O's long time training partners and great friends: Tim Legge, Lisa James and Amy Kuitse. Sarah Cira (Steve's daughter) is our treasurer and involved with the race organizers of the Barron Lake Triathlon as their sponsorship chair. We have recently applied for our 501(c)3 tax exemption filing and anticipate approval in 2014.
Special thanks to Spin Zone Cycling Outfitters in Granger, IN Metro Run and Walk in Mishawaka, IN and ProForm Multisport in South Bend, In for helping to sell wrist band and t-shirts on behalf of Racing For Steve-O!
Funds are also raised by people "Racing For Steve-O" by starting an online fundraising campaign. To date: Sarah Cira, Amy Kuitse, Molly Smith, Nicole Burdge and Doug Troyer have participated in online fundraising for their various racing events.
What are our future plans?
We were recently accepted as the benefiting charity to the 1st Annual Barron Lake Triathlon in Niles Michigan! August 30th, 2014! Mark your calendars! Sprint and Olympic distances. This will be an annual event and is highly anticipated as being one of the premiere triathlons in the Michiana area!
